Beginning September 1, all Northwest ISD elementary schools will feature armed security guards in compliance with new Texas law. These guards are on school grounds to protect students and staff, and they will monitor external doors while supporting a positive school environment.
These guards differ from school resource officers at the secondary level in that they do not perform law enforcement duties, and they cannot enforce district policy such as matters relating to disciplinary issues. To better understand the difference between armed guards and SROs, watch this video.

Northwest ISD will begin offering full-day pre-kindergarten to both qualifying and tuition-based students across the district with the 2023-2024 school year, and online registration begins April 17.
To be eligible for either program, a student must live within the district’s boundaries and be 4 years old by September 1, 2023. To qualify for the state-funded program, a student must fit in at least one criteria required by the state. For families of students who do not meet eligibility requirements for the state program, a tuition-based option exists with a limited number of places available.
In addition to online registration opening Monday, April 17, in-person registration assistance events will take place on three dates at the Northwest ISD administration building, located at 2001 Texan Drive in Justin. Families can visit the admin building from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. April 29, 4 to 7 p.m. May 2 or 2 to 7 p.m. July 13 for assistance.

Childhood literacy ranks among the most vital education matters across the world, and in support of this subject, the Northwest ISD Education Foundation (or NEF) has donated a book to every kindergarten student in Northwest ISD to kick off their educational journey.
As part of this initiative, every Northwest ISD kindergartner received “Rhyming Dust Bunnies” by Jan Thomas to encourage a lifelong commitment to reading. NEF encourages families of kindergartners to join its Kinder Club, where they can learn about how to support Northwest ISD teachers and students.
“Reading is among the most fundamental skills required across any profession or industry,” said Jenn Burton, executive director of NEF. “Northwest ISD has consistently championed reading at all grade levels, and we thought this was a great way to introduce the importance of reading at an early age.”
All 20 Northwest ISD elementary schools received copies of “Rhyming Dust Bunnies” for each kindergartner. The book will help the students continue to develop their reading skills, and the copy each student receives is his or hers to keep.
The Northwest ISD Education Foundation is a nonprofit organization created and operated to support and enhance the quality of education in Northwest ISD. While its two main initiatives are to support teachers through grants and students with scholarships, it also operates many services to benefit students and teachers alike, such as a resource store and library where educators can receive free supplies.
