Registration for Northwest ISD’s 16th annual Reindeer Romp benefiting district physical education programs is now open, with the event itself scheduled for Saturday, December 9.

The event consists of two races, a 5K and 1-mile fun run. The mile race begins at 8:30 a.m., while the longer race begins at 9 a.m. Registration costs $20 per student and $25 per adult. Registrants can take part in either race or both races, if desired.

Members of the Northwest ISD community who are interested in learning about earning their teaching certification are invited to take part in an informational event on Wednesday, October 18. RSVP is required.

The event, part of Northwest ISD’s Grow Our Home program to train those interested in becoming teachers, will last from 5 to 7 p.m. During that time, attendees will hear from district principals, receive resume help and learn tips/tricks to land a job teaching. The event is open to both those who already have a degree and are looking to add a teaching certification, as well as those who want to earn both a degree and teaching certification.

Northwest ISD families can track their students' buses easier than ever before with the new SMART tag system! Based on parent and guardian feedback, our district has transitioned from Zonar to SMART tag this school year.

The SMART (Secured Mobile Authorized Ridership Technology) tag system works by tracking a tablet on a bus with real-time updates. When a student boards a bus, they will scan their tag so the tablet assigns them to the bus for parents and guardians to track. This technology also ensures students board the appropriate bus, as the system will indicate if a student has boarded the wrong bus.

For the start of the school year, drivers will manually log students into the system. During the first two weeks of school, campuses will distribute SMART tags to students. Once obtained, students should keep the SMART tag with them, such as on a lanyard or strapped to their backpack, to scan when boarding a bus.

Parent Portal

Though schools have not yet distributed SMART tags, families can already register for SMART tag alerts and receive updates the first day of school! Parents and legal guardians can register an account on the district’s SMART Tag Parent Portal to monitor whether their child is on the bus as well as the bus’s real-time location. Users of the Parent Portal can also set notifications to alert them via text message when the bus is nearing their child’s stop.

To register for the SMART Tag Parent Portal, families must have the following information ready:

• Their child’s student ID number
• Their child’s date of birth
• The school their child attends

Northwest ISD will again offer free summer meals to children who are ages 18 or younger as well as students with disabilities who are ages 21 and younger as part of the federal Summer Food Service Program.

The program, provided in partnership with the U.S. Department of Agriculture and Texas Department of Agriculture, offers breakfast and lunch meals at no cost from June 5 to 30. Breakfast will be served from 8 to 9 a.m., while lunch will be served from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Students and children can receive the meals at Love Elementary School (located at 16301 Elementary Drive in Justin) or Prairie View Elementary School (609 F.M. 3433 in Rhome).

For children who rely on school meals during the academic year, these meals offer a source of good nutrition when school is out for summer break. Northwest ISD is one of several nonprofit entities that partners with TDA to serve meals across Texas. Families can find additional locations at www.summerfood.org, texting "FOOD" or "COMIDA" to 304-304, or by calling 211 to speak to a live operator.

Northwest ISD campuses will enter the final week of the school year on May 22 to 26, and all schools will operate on early-release schedules on the final day of the school year.

Northwest ISD will host graduation ceremonies for all four high schools following the school year, with details available at www.nisdtx.org/graduation. Steele Early College High School will graduate on May 26 at Byron Nelson High School, while the district’s three comprehensive high schools – Byron Nelson, Eaton and Northwest – will graduate at the University of North Texas Coliseum on May 30.
